Metals inspection company Inspeq Ingeniería LTDA upgrades to PMI-MASTER Smart for on-site, comprehensive analysis

“PMI-MASTER Smart’s accuracy of results, easy handling, and small size and weight for field work are things that inspection companies need the most.”

Inspeq Ingeniería LTDA is a Colombian technical consulting company providing materials and equipment inspections for a range of demanding industries, including oil, energy, transport, mining, naval and manufacturing. They carry out assurance inspections on welded joints of in-service components, such as railway lines and equipment used in the manufacture of medical devices. They also provide analysis of materials at the manufacturing stage. As many components are assessed in the field, a fully portable instrument that works in fully remote areas was essential in the decision process.

Prior to upgrading to the PMI-MASTER Smart, the company used XRF (X-ray fluorescence) equipment to determine the chemical composition of components and a first-generation optical emission spectrometer (OES). This equipment couldn't provide sufficient results for the lighter elements, such as silicon (Si), phosphorous (P), sulfur (S) or carbon (C), which are essential when determining the integrity of weld joints.

An increase in the demand for this type of inspection work led to Inspeq Ingeniería investigating alternatives to their existing analysis equipment.

Here’s what they gained:

  1. Increased productivity due to long battery life
  2. Ability to test light elements like Si, P, S and C accurately and reliably
  3. Light, easily portable equipment to take to client sites
  4. 80% saving in argon consumption
